About this challenge
"Hey Mom. I never told you this before, but...”
May 8 is Mother’s Day. There are so many different ways to view motherhood: biological moms, adopted moms, chosen moms, foster moms, dog moms, the list goes on. In celebration of Mother’s Day, and because we love our Confessions community, we’re launching the Mother’s Day Confessions Challenge to open up about all the stressful, hilarious tribulations of motherhood—whatever that looks like to you.
For this Challenge, we want you to write an open letter to your mom and confess something you've never shared before. What’s the secret you’ve been waiting to tell your mother? Do you have a tattoo you’ve kept under wraps for the last 10 years? Are you secretly responsible for that mysterious blue-green stain on the carpet? If you don’t have a strong relationship with your mom, or you don’t have a secret you'd like to share, you’re welcome to submit a work of fiction as well! All stories are acceptable, as long as they're filled with juicy secrets—the ones you said you'd never tell your mom. Well, here's your chance.
We’re so excited about this Challenge. Come on, spill the 🫖!
Judges:
Vee Rivera is a powerhouse example of a working mother; she has two kids, owns and operates three small businesses, hosts a podcast, and shares relatable content with her loyal following on Instagram and TikTok. She values family, friendships, and supporting other female entrepreneurs and working mothers, which she discusses on her podcast Baby Mamas No Drama.
Britni Church and her family, known as Our Large Family Life, are a household of 14 living in Kansas. Britni uses her vlogs to share her unique and compelling experiences of single motherhood, past hardships, and parenting 12 children (including triplets) with her husband, Chris. With 12 children, Britni knows a thing or two about parenting, making her the perfect addition to this judging panel.
Emily Meagher is a mother of three and uses her social media platforms to spread positivity, love, and encouragement to families all over the world. Her oldest daughter, Abigail, was born with cerebral palsy. Although Abigail has CP, Emily wants to show that her daughter lives life just like anyone else. Emily is a veteran content creator who knows how to tell a good story, so she'll be looking for engaging submissions in her role as a Challenge judge!

For your story to be eligible, it should be between 600 and 5,000 words and adhere to our Community Guidelines. Stories published on Vocal and entered into the contest up until May 31, 2022, at 11:59 PM EST will be entered for consideration. Official Rules for the Challenge can be found here.

A Transparent Look at Vocal Challenges and Top Stories
Almost three years ago, we shared a resource article that served as a place for people to suggest new challenge prompts. We thought it would be a good idea to refresh that thread, and take the opportunity to answer a few common questions about top stories, how challenges are judged and how submissions are reviewed.

A System That Isn’t Working Challenge Winners
Systems promise order. They organize behavior, distribute opportunity, and suggest that if everyone follows the rules, things will work. The entries in A System That Isn’t Working look closely at what happens when that promise begins to slip.
