That Trickster Spirit: Warlock Prankster of the Cosmos

Some people want to see the world burn. Other just want to see the king's boxers.

Dexter was smiling. Justin knew that was a bad sign. “Okay, Dex; what are you planning?”

You could see the wheels in Dexter’s brain moving. “I don’t think someone who ripped us off should get away with it. Do you?”

“Oh boy.”

Dexter’s calculations finally reached a conclusion, and he sped off, followed by Justin. They ended up in front of the Royal Goblin Inn, and Dexter slowed to a walk. He entered the building. The inn was crowded, with everyone involved in a horrible drinking song. Dexter grinned when he saw the target of his machinations. “He’s there at the bar.”

Justin looked, but didn’t see him. “Where? I don’t see him.”

Dexter glared at Justin. “He’s wearing an illusory disguise. Easy enough to see through.” He sighed. “Let’s do this.” He focused, then formed into a tall demon. Pure illusion, but also purely effective. “Do I have your attention?” He uttered ten words to the crowd: “Strip him Peter MacMannis and then dance with him for the next hour.” Dexter then hit the inn with an illusion that transformed those dancing into devils with moonlight coming into the inn. He smiled.

The dozen people around Peter did exactly as told: They stripped him naked and then proceeded to dance with him for the next hour. He was panicked until Dexter dropped the disguise. A calm fire overcame him and he tossed a mug at Dexter. Dexter teleported before the mug hit.

Justin found himself next to Dexter outside the inn. “Well, that silly.”

Dexter grinned. “What? Have you never danced with the devils in the pale moonlight?”

Trickstr deities love causing chaos, and they encourage their warlocks to engage in all sorts of hijinks and shenanigans. They love messing with authority figures, usually trying to show either that authorities are foolish or as revenge for even the smallest slight. Ironically, some even act to reinforce authority by taking down corrupt authorities or those who have grown too comfortable in their position. They are frequently devil’s advocates, acting to argue for the downtrodden and misunderstood. They don’t mind charging into a situation, with improvisation seen as their greatest skill, but aren’t afraid to make glorious plans. Life is not likely to be boring around a trickster.

[Design Considerations: You are the consummate trickster, interested in booping Authority on the nose whenever possible. This means that you’re likely friends with a wide variety of barbarians, bards, and rogues, and may even multi-class into bard or rogue for some of their sneakier skills. It should be noted that most of your spells are available to warlocks anyway; this allows you the room to play with more interesting spells. Feats you may be interested in include Actor, Fey-Touched, Inspiring Leader, Keen Mind, Lucky, Speedy, and Tough (the last three as defensive measures). If you take the Magic Initiate feat, look at the dancing lights, friends, minor illusion, prestidigitation, and vicious mockery cantrips, and the charm person, silent image, and Tasha’s hideous laughter spells.]

Level 3: Trickster Spells

Thanks to the contract with an otherworldly deity, these spells are considered prepared at all times, when you reach the appropriate levels:

  • Level 3: dissonant whispers, disguise self, crown of madness, phantasmal force
  • Level 5: hypnotic pattern, nondetection
  • Level 7: confusion, dimension door
  • Level 9: dream, mislead

Level 3: Illusion’s Friend

You are master of illusions. You can cause Disadvantage to targets of your illusions a number of times equal to you Proficiency Bonus. You can recharge this ability with a Short Rest.

Level 6: Illusion’s Enemy

You can see through illusions easier than most. You can use Advantage to resist illusions a number of times equal to you Proficiency Bonus. You can recharge this ability with a Short Rest.

Level 10: Emergency Escape

You can cast dimension door as a reaction to an attack; if you make a Dexterity save (DC=Attack roll), the spell goes off before damage is rolled (in effect, the attack misses because you aren’t there). You can use this ability a number of times equal to your Charisma. You can recharge this ability with a Long Rest.

Level 14: Friend of the Masses

You can cast mass suggestion a number of times equal to your Charisma. You can recharge this ability with a Long Rest.
