Psych: The running joke of Gus looking like Bud from The Cosby Show

Deon Richmond and Dulé Hill finally appeared together in the final series episode.

Binge-watching Psych on Peacock, I realized how often Burton Guster (Dulé Hill) was asked if he were Bud/Kenny (Dion Richmond) from The Cosby Show. The fans noticed the resemblance from day one and often pointed out that Hill and Richmond looked alike.

The writers decided to capitalize on what viewers were saying. The gag began early in the series when Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodreguiz) told someone that Gus portrayed Bud on The Cosby Show.

Sometimes, no matter how much Gus protested, people on various episodes would insist that he was the Cosby Show kid who was friends with Rudy Huxtable (Keisha Knight Pulliam).

Gus was furious and angrily denied being on the NBC sitcom. After that, the joke continued in different episodes in the following ways: Random people mistake Gus for Kenny, asking, "Didn't you play Bud in the Cosby Show or characters would comment that Gus looks just like the kid from The Cosby Show.

Many times, Shawn introduced his best friend as Bud or as Deon Richmond. He enjoys embarrassing Gus by saying things like: “He prefers not to talk about his child-star days," or “You may remember him as Bud from The Cosby Show.” Gus would often respond by shouting, “I am not Bud!”

The joke became one of Psych's many recurring gags, like the way Shawn gave Gus ridiculous fake names or the ways they both dropped catchphrases like "Suck it" or “C’mon son!”

Buuud and Rudy

The two men don't have much else in common besides their appearance. Hill was born on May 3rd, 1975, and is 5"10. He began his career in 1988 and will appear in Psych 4 once the film is released. Richmond was born on June 2, 1987, and his 5"9. His career began in 1987. His last credited role was the film Cloudy with a Chance of Christmas in 2022.

After eight seasons, the writers gave the fans what they had been waiting for. In the Season 8 series finale, episode 10, “The Break-Up,” Gus has a new job at the pharmaceutical company where he has been working. His new boss, Mr. Richmond, is played by none other than Deon Richmond, who portrayed Bud.

Psychos were elated to see the two men side by side. The highlight of the episode was when Gus quit his job. As he was leaving the building, Mr. Richmond casually said: “Take it easy, Bud.”

It looked like Gus would respond, but he stopped and walked away, clearly exasperated. The moment was priceless, and finally acknowledged the long-running gag that so many people think Gus is Bud.

Anyone who did not watch The Cosby Show or didn't remember HiRichmond's character got to see what all the fuss was about. This cameo appearance was fitting for the final series episode.

Even though Gus didn't portray Bud, the actors have a connection. Dulé Hill appeared in an episode of the 1990s spinoff series Cosby, starring Bill Cosby.

As a side note, in the Season 5 Psych Christmas episode, The Polarizing Express, Keisha Knight Pulliam appeared in a dream sequence as Stranjay, who was married to Gus.

The Psych writers enjoyed giving fans a payoff with the gags. Hill said he was in complete agreement that Richmond should appear in the series. In interviews, he said that he always found the comparison funny. The cast and writers said this was one of the most satisfying jokes that paid off for the fans

When Dion Richmond showed up on the set, the crew joked that it felt like Gus was meeting his alternate-universe twin. Cast members said the resemblance to Dule' Hill was stronger in person than they expected.

Psych currently airs on various networks, and the entire series can be streamed on Peacock. Be on the lookout for updates related to the Psych 4 movie.
