Would It Make a Difference?
A poem and a song

Would it make a difference?
He wondered
If she didn’t love him
Didn’t care for him
As much as he wanted her
It seemed as if
She was constantly miles away
When he was whispering
Sweet nothings in her ear
Oh, their kisses were passionate enough
And her smiles the sweetest they could be
But there was something
Which he couldn’t understand
Her lips said I love you
But her eyes were empty
Deep in the night
He watched her sleep
And wondered who she was dreaming about
He knew that he would be lost without her
But to live being afraid
Of what tomorrow would bring
Froze his heart and made him scared
Came the day when he saw
Her laughing, her blue eyes twinkling
As they looked up at the man
Who wasn’t him
At first it didn’t seem to hurt
He’d known for awhile
That things in their world
Weren’t as they should be
So he crossed on over
And stood in front of the two lovers
Holding out his hand
For the woman who should be his
But she just shook her head
Grabbed onto the hand of the man beside her
And he stood and watched until they were out of sight
Funny in moments like this
For him there was no hate
No regret or anger
Just a feeling of betrayal
And somewhere deep inside
He wondered if it had been his fault
