My Creative Refuge. Top Story - June 2021.
Since I was a kid, I wanted to be a fashion designer. My Mom always says I had my own mind about clothes even before I could speak. When I was a toddler, my Mom and I were passing by a clothing shop and I kept reaching towards the window at this peach velour outfit. She took me into the shop and I was almost possessed by this outfit. She tried to get me to like the navy version instead but I was sure I wanted the peach. Throughout my childhood and teenage years I dreamed of becoming a fashion designer in a big city and having my own brand. After years of dreaming, I ended up getting into Parsons in New York City to study Fashion Design. I was enamoured with the fashion world and New York. While I was there I did countless internships for brands and magazines, school was fun and creative but by the end of my four years I felt a little bit burned out. I decided to move to London to try something new.

Share moments, share Ecoafriq’s handmade.
I started ecoafriq in 2016. I grew up around African crafts and love the colours, creativity and culture. The materials I favour to weave hats and bags are raffia straw, sugarcane, sisal fibres and vines. These materials are biodegradable, easy to dye, weave and are sourced in Africa.

How To Be a Diva
I love fashion, I love designing and the transformative power that clothes can have on an individual. For me creativity has always been something that has been an integral part of my life. Growing up my mother, who is an artist and classically trained pianist, would teach my sister and I the importance of the arts. I began designing clothes at the age of five and by seven years old I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer.

Sew Up
The photo you see for the thumbnail was taken at 6 am on the top of the old garage found in my backyard in Vancouver using my iPhone propped next to a dead branch. This was because I couldn't sleep due to having just finished a project that I had been working on for about a month: A floral vest I made out of an old curtain.

A Fashion Of Sorts.
Creativity can come fast or slow much like the world of fashion. I worked for a few years for a high fashion house learning the ropes and assisting to design the ready to wear collections. Because we were removed from the world of fast fashion, time was in our favour. With only four seasonal collections a year to produce there was more emphasis given to fleshing out the context of our inspiration and developing a complex story with nuances from light and shade, to cut, colour and fabrication. I would spend hours researching the history of our chosen theme and looking for clues to ignite the creative process.

THE FABULOUS DESIGNER
CHAPTER I NEW YORK CITY 1987 While studying at Parsons School of Design, I got a job as a busboy at the Metropolitan Cafe in Union Square. It was a fun job for restaurant work. I loved the atmosphere and helping out the interesting and glamorous waitresses who were pursuing other creative dreams like myself. The regular customer was a stylish, cosmopolitan type. One of the owners was a Scandinavian supermodel.

Back to basics and handmade
Back to basics and handmade.....working to the bone, hand sewing often comes with scratches and pin pricks but the effort is worth it. Two things of anything you make that’s handmade are never the same. There’s always something that slightly different about it. I make collections of brooches, stylised embroidery hoops, and sewn pictures as part of my work but I do other things as well. All my crafts require cutting, stitching, and a lot more time than sewing on a machine.
